A birthday dream, four rain delays, and one golden February afternoon with Cruz the Shire horse, this is how patience turns into the most beautiful photos.

A Birthday Dream That Almost Didn't Happen (Four Times)


Samra called me at the end of the year with a very specific birthday wish. She wanted a photoshoot with a horse. Not a riding session, a proper, beautiful, photoshoot with a horse near Sydney where she could simply be close to one, breathe it all in, and walk away with images she'd treasure.

It's the kind of request I love most.

We originally planned it as a portrait session with a horse, just Samra and Cruz the Shire. But as we talked, her husband decided to join too, and the session evolved into a couples photoshoot with a horse, which I think was the right call. These photos needed two people in them.

And then January arrived — and with it, the kind of Sydney rain that has no interest in cooperating.

Four Reschedules and One Perfect Day


Anyone who has organised an outdoor photoshoot in Sydney knows that summer weather can be completely unpredictable. January looked promising on paper. In reality, it delivered heavy rain, waterlogged paddocks, and the kind of grey skies that make a photographer wince.

We rescheduled four times. Four. And while I completely understand how that can feel discouraging, I always tell my clients: waiting for the right day is never wasted time.

When the day finally came, it was stunning. The paddocks had dried out, the air had that warm, still quality of a proper summer morning, and the light, the light was golden. That yellow, late-afternoon glow that filters through the eucalypts and turns everything it touches into something cinematic. It was worth every cancelled session.

Cruz — A Shire Horse Built for Beautiful Moments


The star of this session was Cruz, one of the horses I rent for photoshoot, he is a Shire horse, and a very different character to the other horses in my small herd.

Cruz is big. Shire horses are among the largest breeds in the world, and there is something genuinely awe-inspiring about standing next to one for the first time. But what strikes people almost immediately after that first moment of "oh, he is enormous" is just how calm he is. Cruz moves slowly and deliberately. He leans in rather than pulling away. He has a presence that makes people feel still.

For this kind of session, a couples portrait shoot with a horse, focused on connection and feeling rather than action, Cruz was the perfect choice. We weren't chasing movement or dramatic silhouettes. We were after intimacy, warmth, and the quiet kind of beauty that doesn't shout.

The Session — Slow, Still, and Full of Feeling


We took our time. That's not always how I like to work — I genuinely love energy and movement in a photoshoot — but with Cruz, and with this couple, slow was exactly right.

The farm setting near The Gables is private and beautifully natural. Tall trees, green bushes, open paddock — it looks like the kind of place city people drive an hour to find, which is exactly what it is. There's a stillness out there that's hard to manufacture, and it gave Samra and her husband permission to just relax and exist together.

We moved through the session gently. Some frames with all three of them, Cruz, Samra, and her husband, standing quietly together. Some with Cruz as the backdrop while the couple found their own moments. And then, towards the end, something I quietly love to watch happen in these sessions: the bravery builds.

By the time we were wrapping up, Samra was pressed close against Cruz, arms around his neck, her face buried in the warmth of his coat. She could feel his breath, his weight, the texture of his mane. That smell that anyone who grew up around horses knows immediately and never forgets.
