When the lovely Hoang reached out to me, she had a beautiful vision—she dreamed of a photoshoot with horses in Sydney, even though she didn’t have a horse of her own. She wanted to include her partner and their adorable Border Collie, Max, for a relaxed session with horses.

As someone who regularly photographs families, couples, and horses, I’m usually working with people who already own their horses. But for a long time, I’ve wanted to offer something different—an experience where you can feel the soft breath of a horse, run your hands through their soft fur, and look into those gentle, soulful eyes, without needing to own one. And now, I finally can! Thanks to a lovely private property near Scheyville and Gables in Sydney. I’ve partnered with local horse owners to make this dream possible.

Hoang’s session was our very first—and I was absolutely over the moon with how it turned out. She connected so naturally with the horses, even more confidently than some experienced young riders I’ve worked with. It truly was the ultimate horse photoshoot experience for couples and families in Sydney—and a memory they’ll (hopefully) never forget.

Preparing for the Dream Session with horses & Dogs – Outfits, date, time and a Video Chat

Just like with all my sessions, we started with a friendly pre-session video call. I always love this part—it’s where we chat about what to wear, how to make sure your pup looks camera-ready, and what to expect during the session. Whether you’re planning a couples photoshoot with a dog in Sydney, or a family photoshoot with animals, preparation is everything, and this chat is where the magic begins.

For this session, I was especially excited. Why? Because it was the first time I introduced the new superstars to my photography team—Gigs, a stunning 28-year-old pinto horse with the exact same coat colour as Max the Border Collie! I’m not kidding—they looked like long-lost siblings. It made for the most heart-melting, visually gorgeous photos. Just wait until you see them side by side—brothers from another mother, truly!

Alongside Gigs was my all-time favourite equine character—Leo, the retired racehorse who behaves more like a golden retriever than a horse. Leo has this hilarious, carrot-obsessed personality. If there’s a snack or cuddle to be found, he’ll be there. He’s so curious about people, always sticking his nose in for a photo or sneaky treat, and has the biggest heart.

Since we’re heading into the colder months, both horses had their fluffy winter coats—like giant, living teddy bears! Photographing them while they gently wandered around the paddock, accepting cuddles (or sneakily searching for carrots), was a dream. This is why I’m so excited to now offer photoshoots with horses in Gables and Scheyville to people who may not own horses, but still want that magical connection in their portraits.

Let’s Not Forget the photoshoot was not just about horses but Max – The Goodest Collie Boy

Max, the star Border Collie, may not have been impressed with my squeaky toys (honestly, he was the second Border Collie this month to ignore them—I may need to up my squeaky game!), but he was a total gem. All it took was a stick and a few cuddles from his humans to keep him happy. He posed like a pro and brought that special spark that only dogs can add to a session.
