A Birthday Photoshoot with a horse That Came Together in No Time


Most of my photoshoots are booked weeks, sometimes two months, in advance. That's usually how I like to work, so I can plan the location, the light, and make sure the right horse is ready for the day. But every now and then, a request comes in that I just can't say no to.


That's exactly what happened when Renu reached out to me about a birthday photoshoot with a horse in Sydney. The timing was tricky. I was away from home, dealing with one sicknes after another, only able to check messages on my phone. I had already turned down a few shoots that week. But this one felt different, and I really wanted to make it happen.

Why Cruz Was the Perfect Model Horse for This Celebration


Normally, I let my clients pick which horse suits their session best, based on the vibe they want and the horse's personality. This time, I made an exception. As soon as I heard it was a birthday photoshoot for a big, round birthday, I already knew who I wanted there: Cruz.


Cruz has already been part of a few birthday photoshoots before, and there's a reason for that. He has this majestic, calm presence that photographs beautifully, especially for a milestone celebration. So instead of giving a list of horses to choose from, I simply suggested Cruz, and it turned out to be exactly right.

Balloons, Cake, and a Very Photogenic Horse


On the day, the family showed up looking absolutely fabulous. The dresses were lovely, the balloons were a lot of fun, and there was even a cake made just for the occasion. We started with some birthday-style photos with the balloons and cake, then moved on to family portraits with Cruz. The star was of course the birthday girl, so most of the portraits we did was celebrating this milestone.


The mix of a soft, dressed-up birthday theme with a big, gentle horse standing beside the family created some genuinely stunning photos. There's something about a horse photoshoot that adds a bit of magic you just don't get from a regular birthday shoot, and this session captured that perfectly.

FAQs About Horse Birthday Photoshoots in Sydney

Do I need to know how to ride a horse for a birthday photoshoot?

Not at all. Most birthday sessions with Cruz are simple posed photos standing beside him or nearby. If you would like to sit on him, a signed hold harmless agreement is generally needed for any riding pictures. (This is provided prior the session for signature)

How much notice do you need for a horse photoshoot in Sydney?

Normally I recommend booking around two months ahead, especially for weekends. Short-notice sessions like this one are possible sometimes, but they depend on my availability and the horse's schedule, so it's always best to reach out as early as you can.

Where do horse photoshoots take place?

The horses are living on a private property in Maraylya, NSW, which gives us a relaxed, natural setting without the stress of finding your own location.

Can I bring balloons, a cake, or props for a birthday theme?

Depending on a horse we will be using, but yes! This session is a great example of that. Balloons, a cake, and a birthday theme all worked beautifully alongside Cruz the horse.

Is this suitable for a milestone or round birthday?

A horse photoshoot is a memorable way to mark a big birthday, and it creates photos that feel a lot more special than a typical indoor birthday shoot.
