When Plans Change and the Sky Turns Grey — A Horse Maternity & Family Photoshoot in Rouse Hill, Sydney


There is something that happens in front of a horse that you can never quite plan for — a softening, a quiet stillness that slips in between poses and perfectly timed smiles. It happened with Sarah and Justin too.

This session was months in the making, and it is one of those stories I love to tell — because nothing went exactly as planned, and yet everything turned out beautifully.

How It All Started: A Dream of a Black or Grey Horse


When Sarah first reached out, she had a very specific vision in her mind. She wanted a black horse, or perhaps a grey (white), those dramatic, almost cinematic shades that make maternity photos look like they belong in a magazine editorial.

I had to be honest with her: I don't have a black or grey horse in my herd. (You can browse all of my horses here →)

What I do have is Gigolo, Gigs, as we call him. A stunning pinto with the most gentle, patient soul of any horse I have ever worked with. (See Gigs' full profile here →)

I told Sarah: trust me on this one. Gigs has a way of showing up for people, especially pregnant mamas and little ones, that no other horse I own quite matches. He reads the room. He leans in. He is extraordinary.

She trusted me. And she was right to.

A Family of Six — Instead of Four


Originally, the plan was simple: Sarah, Justin, and their two youngest children, an eight-year-old and a six-year-old, for a relaxed Sunday maternity session with Gigs the horse.

Then, as life so often does, things shifted at the last minute. Their two adult children decided to join as well. Suddenly, we were a family of six.


There is something moving about photographing all of a family's children together, the little ones still with sleep-soft cheeks and wide eyes, and the grown ones who stand beside their parents with that quiet pride that only adult children carry.

Sarah's belly, full and round and glowing even under a grey sky, was the centre of it all. She was growing another human being, and here was the whole family, every single one of them, gathered around her. That felt really special.

The Wednesday That Almost Wasn't


We had to reschedule our original Sunday session due to availability. So we moved to a Wednesday afternoon. This midweek, mid-afternoon, turned out, threatening to rain. And then it did rain.

Just a little though.

We waited. The rain stopped. The clouds stayed, and then it was perfect.

The green of the paddock looked almost luminous under that heavy sky. Sarah's cream outfit and the family's coordinated whites glowed against the moody backdrop. Gigs stood quietly, his black and white coat striking, his ears soft and forward. The light was everything.

Were we lucky or unlucky that day? I still ask myself. I think we were lucky. I think the rain knew what it was doing.

Posed or Candid? Yes.


I will be transparent here — my heart lives in the candid moments. The stolen glance between partners. The way a six-year-old reaches up and pats a horse's nose with both hands, entirely unsure and entirely brave at the same time. The breath a woman takes when she rests her cheek against something warm and strong and calm.


Sarah and Justin and their family were more comfortable with posed photos, and that is completely valid. Not every family wants the chaotic-beautiful candids, and it is my job to give people the gallery they will treasure — not the gallery I personally prefer.

So we posed. We guided. We created structure and connection within that structure. And honestly? I think we found a beautiful balance. There are frames in this gallery that are clean and composed and timeless. And there are a few frames I snuck in — the ones where someone looked at someone else when they thought no one was watching, that I think will become the ones they return to in twenty years.

That is the thing about photography. You never quite know which image will crack you open.

What a Horse Adds to a Maternity or Family Photoshoot


People often ask me: why a horse? What does it change?

Here is what I have noticed, session after session:

Horses slow people down. You cannot rush a horse. You cannot perform for a horse. They require your presence — your actual, physical calm — and in demanding that, they strip away the self-consciousness that so many people bring to a photoshoot.

Horses create natural connection. When a child reaches up to touch a muzzle, or a pregnant woman leans her forehead against a warm neck, the photograph captures something unscripted and irreplaceable. You cannot fake that kind of tenderness.

Horses change the scale of an image. A horse beside a pregnant belly creates extraordinary visual storytelling — strength and gentleness, size and softness, all in one frame.

Gigs, in particular, is extraordinary with children and with expectant mothers. He moves slowly, reads body language, and has a steadiness that puts even nervous first-timers completely at ease.

Yes, absolutely. We provide the horses for your session — you don't need to own one.

What colours should I wear for a horse photoshoot?

Soft neutrals work beautifully — cream, white, blush, sage, dusty blue, and earthy tones all photograph wonderfully against horse coats and green pasture. Avoid neon colours or busy patterns. Coordinate your family without being too matchy-matchy — think a tonal palette rather than identical outfits.

What if the weather is bad on the day of my session?

I always have a rescheduling option. That said, as Sarah and Justin's session proves — a moody sky can produce some of the most stunning images. We will always make a call together on the day based on safety and conditions.

Which horse is best for a maternity photoshoot?

Gigolo (Gigs) is our go-to for maternity and family sessions, particularly where young children are involved. He is exceptionally patient and responsive to calm handling.

Do you photograph families with horses in the Hills District?

Yes — I am based in Rouse Hill and service the entire Hills District including Castle Hill, Kellyville, Box Hill, Baulkham Hills, Stanhope Gardens, and surrounding areas.

How far in advance should I book a maternity horse photoshoot?

Ideally book by 28–30 weeks of pregnancy so we have flexibility to reschedule if needed. Sessions are best photographed between 30–35 weeks when the bump is beautifully round but you are still comfortable to move around.
