Sometimes, the best photoshoots come from the loveliest surprises! I originally asked if I could use Dixi, the beautiful border collie in a personal project photoshoot to enter into an international pet photography award. Although timing didn’t allow for that project, something even more special came up!

With Chris’s birthday around the corner, Annabel reached out to see if I could create a couples and puppy photoshoot for them. Knowing this was my specialty, I was thrilled to be part of such a thoughtful birthday present in the heart of Concord, Inner West Sydney. And as it turned out, this wasn’t just any photoshoot!

That morning, Chris had proposed to Annabel, so they arrived newly engaged, with Dixi adding so much playful charm to every shot.
Just a few days before the session, I got an excited message from Chris—he’d accidentally discovered the surprise birthday photoshoot Annabel had planned. The twist? He was planning a surprise of his own! With a family dinner already set up for the same day, he shared with me that he’d chosen that exact day to propose to Annabel! 🎉 I was over the moon, knowing that photographing newly engaged couples in Sydney is one of the most beautiful things. There’s just something magical about that “just said yes” glow. It’s like capturing pure joy—nothing can go wrong! With their love radiating and Dixi doggy by their side, I knew this was going to be a session filled with heartfelt moments, and more than a few laughs.

As part of my session pre-planning, I always make sure to chat with my couples about their expectations and the best locations for a dog-friendly photoshoot. Since we were planning a dog-friendly photoshoot in Sydney, the location had to be calm, open, and pet-friendly. Initially, we had picked Clifton Gardens at Mosman, which offers an amazing variety of backdrops—beach, park, rocks, and bushland, all in one place. It’s one of my favourite spots for a Sydney engagement photoshoot or even a proposal photoshoot with a dog.

But as luck would have it, I decided to head to Clifton Gardens a little earlier on that public holiday to check things out. To my surprise, it was packed—more crowded than Christmas Day. There was no space left to set up a proper couples photoshoot or let Dixi, the Border Collie, enjoy her time with the couple.

After a quick call to Annabel, we decided to shift to our backup location: Concord Sydney Inner West suburb! And what a perfect choice it turned out to be. The park near the old hospital in Concord was peaceful, private, and had a beautiful mix of greenery and stunning architecture for our dog-friendly engagement photoshoot. Not only was it a calm and dog-friendly spot, but Dixi was able to run freely and be part of every precious moment. Sometimes a last-minute change of plans turns out to be just what you needed!

Well, that was a plot twist I didn’t see coming! Just when I thought Clifton Gardens at Mosman was going to be my go-to for the perfect Sydney engagement photoshoot with a dog, it turned into a beach day nightmare. I was ready to take photos, but it felt more like I’d stepped into a beach party photoshoot—tents, umbrellas, and people everywhere! Thank goodness for last-minute changes, because Concord came to the rescue! Who knew a park near an old hospital could turn into the most magical backdrop for a proposal photoshoot?

Dixi, the Border Collie, was as fabulous as ever, and we got to capture all her adorable, doggy moments, from her playful runs to her sweet snuggles with her newly engaged humans. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love doing what I do. No two photoshoots are ever the same—whether it’s a surprise proposal or a couple’s photoshoot with your best dog buddy, every session brings something unexpected and heartwarming.
