Some sessions stay with you long after the files are delivered. This was one of them.
Not because it was perfect, it was wonderfully imperfect in all the right ways. But because the reason behind it was so quietly beautiful that I found myself smiling the whole way home.
A Gift Wrapped in Salt Air
Shara lives in New Zealand. She had flown to Sydney to see her parents and her brother before he set off on a big adventure overseas, the kind of adventure that puts oceans between people for a while.
Both Shara and her brother are grown up now, living their own lives across different corners of the world. But they wanted to do something meaningful together before the distance stretched out again. They wanted to give their mum something she could hold onto. So they gifted her a family photoshoot.
I mean, come on. If that doesn't make your heart do something, I don't know what will.
They chose Bronte Beach because it meant something to them. It wasn't just a pretty backdrop, it was their place. Their stretch of coastline. Their version of home. And there is something so different about photographing a family in a location that actually belongs to their story, versus somewhere that just looks good on Instagram.
Bronte held this family. And it showed in every single frame.
The Early Morning Plan (And the Public Holiday Plot Twist)
When we were planning the session, Shara and her family wanted an early morning slot. Early mornings at the beach mean soft light, cool air, and (most importantly) quiet. No crowds. No strangers walking through your frames. Just the family, the waves, and that gorgeous pastel sky.
Except. It was a public holiday.
I want you to imagine arriving at Bronte Beach at sunrise on a public holiday in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, a beach that locals and visitors already love fiercely, and discovering that, apparently, everyone in Sydney had also decided to come and watch the sunrise that morning.
There were people everywhere. We laughed about it. What else do you do? You adapt, you move, and you find the shot anyway, because that is what this job is, honestly. It is not always about having the perfect conditions. It is about being flexible enough to create something beautiful within the imperfect ones.
And here is the thing: the sky absolutely delivered. The sunrise colours that morning were spectacular, the kind of pink and gold that looks edited even when it isn't, the kind that makes the ocean look like it is glowing from the inside. All those early risers who had shown up knew something we didn't: it was going to be a good one.
Finding Our Own Corner of Bronte Beach for this family photosohoot
We moved. We explored. We found a quieter spot on the other side of the beach, away from the crowd of sunrise watchers, and we made it ours.
This is one of the things I genuinely love about Bronte as a photoshoot location, it has texture. It is not just a flat expanse of sand. There are rocks, pools, pathways, greenery, little alcoves. You can always find a frame within a frame if you know where to look.
And once we settled in, the magic happened.
The colours were still there. The light was still extraordinary. And now it was just us — a mum, her daughter, her son, their father and a camera.
This Family, Though
I have to talk about this family for a moment because they were genuinely one of the most fun groups I have had the pleasure of working with.
You know how some families arrive at a photoshoot a little stiff? A little nervous? Doing that polite, slightly wooden version of themselves that photographs fine but doesn't quite sing? Not this crew.
Shara and her brother were completely game for everything. Every silly idea I had — yes. Every slightly awkward pose that I promised would look amazing in the final image — sure, let's try it. The laughter was real. The silliness was genuine. And their mum, standing in the middle of it all, beamed in a way that I don't think had very much to do with the camera at all.
That is what you are actually trying to capture in a family photoshoot, not the poses, but the feeling underneath them. The ease between people who love each other deeply. The way a mum looks at her kids even when they're adults and still sees every version of them she has ever known.
I got a lot of that on this morning.
When They Choose More Than Their Package
At the end of every session, my clients receive a gallery. They have a set number of images included in their package, a carefully chosen collection that tells the full story of their session.
Shara's family chose significantly more than their package included. I always take that as a good sign. Not because of the extra images, but because it means the session landed. It means they opened that gallery and kept finding frames they couldn't leave behind. It means something in those photos felt worth holding onto.
That is the whole point. That is everything.

It has variety. Sand, rock pools, grassy clifftop reserves, the iconic Bronte Baths — you can create a diverse gallery within a small area, which means the session never looks repetitive.
It feels less staged than Bondi. Don't get me wrong — I love Bondi. But Bronte has a neighbourhood feel that translates beautifully in photos. It is relaxed and real in a way that suits family photography perfectly.
Early mornings are magical (usually!). On a regular day, the beach is beautifully quiet before 7am. You get the colours, the calm, and the coastline almost entirely to yourself. Public holidays are — as Shara's family discovered — a delightful exception.

I want to be clear about something: I am based in Rouse Hill in Sydney's Hills District, and the Eastern Suburbs is not my backyard. But sessions like this one? I will travel for them every single time.

Bronte in particular has multiple areas to work with, so there is almost always a solution. The light and the love between your family travel with you wherever we go.
Can you photograph adult families — grown-up children and parents?
Yes, and honestly I love these sessions. There is something deeply meaningful about photographing parents and their adult children — particularly when distance or life circumstances mean you are not all together very often. These are the photos that get framed on walls and treasured for decades.
Do I need to be based in Sydney to book a session?
Not at all. Like Shara, many of my clients are visiting Sydney from interstate or overseas and want to capture a moment while they are all together. I am used to planning sessions around travel schedules and limited windows of time.
How many photos will I receive from my family photoshoot?
Your gallery will include the number of images outlined in your chosen package. That said — if you fall in love with more than your package includes (which happens more often than you'd think!), additional images can be added to your collection.
